Recipe for a Great small group

I have the privilege to be part of Entrepreneur Organization‘s forum groups, part of Entrepreneurs Anonymous peer-to-peer learning group and also part of few Christian small groups along the way.  I’ve seen great groups and not so great groups but are committed to make it great.  So what makes a group great?

I think:

  • Commitment – People who joins the group has to be committed.  I don’t mean only the commitment to the group, but also commitment to themselves that they want to be the best they were created to be.  You are allocating X hours of your schedule, why waste it? If the group isn’t a good fit for you, why join? Make sure people are bought into the vision.  The group is as much as about you, as it’s about the others.
  • House Rules – Must have set of guiding principles and rules. To discourage people being sloppy with time, attendance. Confidentiality to create a safe environment to share, make sure that there is no conflict of interest or no conflict amongst each other. Don’t be afraid to address the elephant in the room.
  • Transparency/Honesty – The group is only good as good as how much effort each member puts in.  Check your ego at the door.  No one is perfect, or have it all together. You think you are afraid of the person sitting across the room, thinking they will judge you, well, very likely that the same person has the same thought about you.
  • Share experiences/Not telling someone what they should do – People won’t heed your advice until they really want it.  It’s lot easier to hear someone else’ experience than to their opinions.  It’s just your opinion, it doesn’t make it right for everyone.  Also, never try to answer a question that hasn’t been asked.

When everyone is on the same page, and take on the vision themselves, they’ll be able to self police.  But often, there will need to be a leader.  Being a leader can be a lonely place – sometimes you’ll have to call someone out, sometimes you’ll have to make a difficult decision, but at the end of the day, it’s not a popularity contest.  It’s about the vision of the original group and the purpose it was set out to do.

Comfort, the American Idol

As I was driving to a meeting today, I was again pondering on the thought ‘how long o God, how long?’ on the situations at work.  I am having a hard time getting things to bear fruit and not seeing the revenue going up.  I’ve sought out improvements, seeking His directions and prayed lots.  But how much longer?

Part, I feel it’s patience that I needed to have.

Other part, as much as I know the revenue will help us to grow as a company, to expand the team and to really taking the company to the next level, there is the desire in me to finally see some personal financial gains as well.  Living to get by with a slim margin is very uncomfortable to me.

So as I was driving, the thought of – am I doing all the things so that I can secure comfort? Has doing and seeking God’s will turned into the hopes of increasing His blessing for me?

Ultimately I realized that I follow and serve Him because of the gratitude and reverence I have. Period.  Not because of wanting more blessing or favor from God.  I should be completely satisfied even if my personal financial situation never see another gain.  He may bless me more, but that’s not my motive to follow Him.

Desires – Follow up

This is a follow up to my previous post on Desires.

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart”

How do we know we are delighting in Him and will He give you all the desires? – a common question.

What are your thoughts to this?

I say: When you’ve allowed all your needs be met by God and you are completely satisfied in God, the desires that are left in your heart is of God for your life

Ponder on it. Leave me comments.

Puffy Clouds. Playing Harps.

At some point I imagined what heaven would be like. A typical image of puffy clouds and musical harp come to mind. Then there is the imagery from the book of revelation. All bow down to the lamb where the trumpet sounds.

My thought: that seem awfully boring.

A friend of mine pointed out at the time that isn’t the fact I will be with Christ unhindered exciting? Endless worshiping and commune with Christ joyful?

It’s anything but boring.

Now that I think about the same topic again, I can fully understand what my friend was feeling. I can feel it myself.

Heaven is heaven not because of the place, but because who is there. Heaven without God, is hell. And I rather be in hell with God than be in heaven without. I don’t want to be where God isn’t there.
